Fire Damage! What do you do next?

Fire Damage and What to do Next.

Fire damage to your home or business is emotional and trying experience.  Remember these five actions to take if and when a fire strikes your property as suggested by the experts at Cityline Construction of Allentown.

Evacuate the building as quickly as possible and call 911.

The fire fighter’s job is to extinguish the fire as quickly and safely as possible.  They may need to force entry to release heat and smoke.  All utilities need to be turned off. After the flames are extinguished, firefighters may need to overhaul the building to ensure a fire will not reignite. Often, floors, walls, and attic spaces may need to be opened.

Call your insurance company promptly using the 1-800 number on your home owner’s insurance policy.  If you don’t have your insurance card, a quick Google search for your insurance carrier will lead you to the national or regional number, where an insurance adjuster will be on call to start to process your claim. The staffer answering your emergency is trained to handle your crisis. Be ready to write down an insurance claim number. Eventually, you will need to detail damage and losses room by room. An adjuster may photograph damages as well.

If your property is uninhabitable, and you and your family needs shelter, clothing or food, call the Red Cross Disaster Services of the Lehigh Valley at 610-866-6660. They are available 24/7 to assist your needs.  It may take days or weeks for your property to be habitable. Your insurance adjuster will respond to your need for longer-term temporary housing.
